Influenced Worship... Hmmm

Postby Jose.Ferrell on Tue Jan 29, 2008 10:35 pm

So today, just now, I was wondering and came to a thought.

Imagine, you're in worship, your eyes are closed and you're just singing the song to the Lord and loving on Him and really going after Him. Then, for some reason, you open your eyes and see the guy (or girl) next to you just standing there, arms crossed maybe, and looking strait ahead. How do you react to that? In my time I've seen my fair share of people who let others effect their worship. Either they let others deter their worship or they let others encourage their worship.

Have you been there? Have I been there? Or maybe we're just all oblivious to it all. Maybe we're letting it happen accidentally. I mean worship is from the heart... So why should others influence our worship. BUT then again, where two are more are gathered. Isn't there encouragement when you see other people worshiping with their whole heart... Doesn't it encourage you to be free to worship? "He who has been forgiven much, loves much" or look at King David, dancing unashamed and even saying he will become even more undignified! Does that not inspire you to engage more in worship? But then again, isn't it possible to be in worship, not be jumping around and still be visibly engaged? I think so anyways....

I dunno... Any thoughts? Any Takers?

There's no real story behind it. I just was reminded on how like at 212 (the youth group) I see so many kids who want to really try to be free and worship God, but because they are with their "cool" friends, they either hold back or don't worship at all. And I really don't think it should be that way... I really don't think there should be a bind between our worship to God and what my friends think... And it shouldn't be that way... but at the same time, how come so many people let their friends control their relationship with God?

What happened to be unashamed of loving God you know? I dunno... It's a mid-way developed thought... But I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, and I'm sure you've seen it around even a little. How can we encourage people to go beyond thinking what others think and really let worship be them and God.

Ya know?

I feel ya, it took me a couple (maybe several =)) months to get to the point where I wanted God more than I cared about what people thought about me and how I worship. Sometimes I feel weird trying to worship God with all my might and my heart, I get self conscious for a moment thinking perhaps I'm too loud and I'll distract people... but then I remember that God delights in my worship even when my voice cracks or I look silly and it always makes me smile and re-engage with him. I love it when during worship its like you're not even trying to connect with God anymore its just flows, and he fills you up. Thats enough incentive to me to close my eyes and just worship him, even if everyone is silent. Also sometimes just remembering that we are worshiping the God. God himself, it makes you want give everything you have because he's worthy of a people devoted.

I understand what you mean too about looking at other people with their arms crossed and thinking "don't they want God"? But I've just made it a point not to judge and just worship how the Holy Spirit leads me, who knows maybe they just want to stand still and soak in his presence or they just need God to touch them and pull them out of their shell.

God who sees and knows the heart.

In a church service people come at different levels spiritual. I once heard when someone asked how come at service it seems like we hinder or stop worship early? It's up to the people. God is always here with us but for him to manifest or show His power more we must ask for Him to come. My hope and goal is to be so consumed and always in a place of worship that it becomes contagious. Last night I felt and heard God so loud that I had to just sit and be still. I love those times! Where I don't have say anything but on the inside my heart is raging!!! God may you burn my insides for you!

I’m with Alisi. People are at different places and people have different “prayer styles.” I was once in a time in my life where I was surrounded by people who were very loud and somewhat violent when they would pray/worship (not like hit people violent but lots of walking, rocking, running, etc) and that was not me at all. It’s like in I Can Only Imagine where it says,

Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel
Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all

I’m a “be still and know” typically, but there ARE times when God calls me out of my box and I dance too. I just think that personality plays a role in it.

Jose, I think teenagers really struggle with that issue because of the stage of their development. During those years, relationships with friends are probably more important than anything else. They'll sacrifice their spiritual development to be cool or accepted by their peers.

However, as they grow older and they get their butts "whooped" by life, they realize that God is really the only Person they can completely trust. As they mature as Christians, many of them grow to realize that a relationship with Him comes first.

Romans 2:4(KJV) - Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

It's hard to explain to a young man that God should be #1 in his life until he runs out of options. Many of us who now freely worship God have been there. We saw His goodness in action and now we don't care what anyone else does. We have personally experienced God and we know that He deserves our worship.
You never give up until God says it's over!
