Apr 23rd - Kill the Debt Monkey!

So, I know it's always intimidating when we talk about money, but what were everybody's thoughts about "Killing the Debt Monkey"?!?!

My thoughts = It was awesome to see how money is not only a spiritual decision but how and on what we spend it can give glory to God and make the name of Jesus famous. I've read Dave Ramsey’s book and heard him speak but this was another level.

I hate debt and Dede and I decided to do whatever it takes to get out of it. Every day we pray for D-Day. (Debtless Day) where we are free from any debt, owing nothing to another. I've seen my grandparents buried and instead of being able to mourn them the family immediately has to decided whose gonna pay for the Sears debt, whose gonna pay for the 2nd Mortgage, etc, etc.

I want to leave a legacy for my children; not a drawers of bad credit for them to pay off. If we applied this stuff to our lives we could actually do something with the wealth this generation has.

Yes I am so about gettin rid of my debt, I truly do not have any debt outside of my car and SCHOOL LOANS. Awww man I just dont even know how i am going to pay off those school loans. I dont have to pay on them yet BUT just the thought that I will soon have too is so overwelming I dont know what I am going to do. I believe God will show me how to get out of it though, my desire is to get rid of my debt before I get married, or plan on having a family. I believe in God for that.
I have a question though for those that are married (or single I guess). How do you think that Debt can affect a marriage, for instance if you come into the relationship with all this debt and your future spouse has no debt, now they have to help you pay for it? Do you think that it can strain your marriage? Woud love to get you thoughts on that
:-) especially the married folks

I am so ready to kill the debt monkey!! I had one that wasn't even that much that I had just been putting off paying. I finally cracked down after this message and took care of it. Those school loans though...that's a whole other story. I can't wait for the message about how to go about getting out of debt. A debt free life just sounds beautiful. To be out of debt and able to invest our money into God's Kingdom...even more beautiful.

In all honesty I wanna buy someone a house. "Hey brother the Lord told me to give you this"
THAT would be sooo tight
I wouldn't do it if I didn't love you.

In response to Shami, yes, money is cited as the #1 reason people get divorced...obviously we know that a damaged relationship with Jesus is the #1 reason...but the fights & separation usually center around debt/money.

It can definitely strain a marriage, but it's not a "deal breaker." I think the two people simply have to be honest with each other before they get married about everything, including their debt. If that info is shared then both sides KIND OF know what they are getting into. You never really know until you say "I Do" and the bills start coming in.

More often than not though, previous debt isn't just in the past...it's bad money making decisions that are still going on...and I think that is much more toxic to a marriage than past debt. If one person is still foolishly spending money that's worse than having to write the checks to the creditors every month. Because that means you are still digging the hole instead of trying to get out of it.

Just commit yourself to getting out of debt now, making strong movements in that direction. But don't let that be the deciding factor about marriage or a relationship.

I really enjoyed this message. It's really refreshing that at fusion we cover every aspect of our lives so that we are giving glory to God in all things. Personally I needed this message at this point in my life because eventhough all I have is my car and student loans, I'm one of those people who continues to barely "break even." Even before this series I noticed that it seriously keeps me from giving. I'm truly open to whatever it is that we have to do to kill the debt monkey so we are completely available to God.

It was really good. My favorite part of the message was when Johnson was talking about when you spend money, you are spending part of your life!! Wow, that was amazing. It really has been making me think before I spend money. It was a great way of putting things. You know when I see something I want to buy, I ask myself now how much of my life am I giving away to get this item. Thx Johnson. It really help put things into perspective, and encouraged me to think "am what I am spending my money on, will it make a difference in eternity"? Thx.
