Race

Postby Iserve on Fri Nov 21, 2008 7:47 pm

I know, I know its not Black History Month, why am I bringing this up now........Gosh!!!!!!

I won't make some long speech... I just want to pose a few questions.

1-a.)Do you believe that race is real?

1-b.) Is it more than a perception or conscruct we hate, yet embrace by actions and speech?

2.) Do you believe that race is a biblical concept?

3.) As Christans at a racially reconciling church, what vestiges of your races do you find yourself holding on to now that the old you is dead and the new you is alive?

Answer any or all...........

This might sound a little ridiculous but I do not believe race is real because we all are descendents of the same two people Adam and Eve so we are family. I believe race is biblical and I have an interesting theory on the Color Difference.

The Tower Of Babel

Genesis 8-9 states 8 So the LORD dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth. And from there the LORD dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

The last verse says from there he separated which implies the start of separation, So who is to say that the people's languages were not the only thing to be separated because race or the (color of skin) is not a big issue in the bible but the names of the types of people are Gentiles, Hittites Act.

I'm not 100% sure that I will answer any of these questions, but I think the word "race" is misleading. From the common and simplest understanding, we say it's skin color. However, I beg to differ on the opinion that there is a such thing as race(if I'm wrong that's fine this just an opinion). I don't think that there are mutiple races of people. Scientifically speaking, we all belong to the same species. I never heard of anyone calling a dog, cat, bird, or monkey for that matter any thing other than a particular species or breed. Does race exists, is it real? Yes, because we created it as a way to differentiate and relate to groups of people.

I don't think race is biblical concept. The only thing I can recall that really differentiates people in the bible was from the Jew/Gentile point of view, Samaritans, or by nation/tribe and oh yeah Giants . I'm not sure if during the tower of babel skin color changed. Really, the only thing I know explicitly stated was the creation of different languages. It's possible that it happened, but I don't think that it did, I'm pretty sure that would have been mentioned, b/c that would have been some extremely supernatural stuff on top of the fact that all of sudden everyone is speaking a different language.

Genetically speaking, the difference in so called races is .1%(based on random testing of individuals)

I don't think anyone holds on to their race's vestiges...more like culture and social teachings, but yeah I sometimes do and other times I don't.

I agree with what was said about different races and I like the animal comments mentioned above :) and even the genetics makes a lot of sense. When I was speaking about the tower of Babel theory it was based on the fact that the passage implies that the change in language was the bringing because it says “LORD confused the language of all the earth. And from there the LORD dispersed them over the face of all the earth.” With that said it could either be a miraculous because there are things that we don’t know that are left out of the bible and only Jesus knows why the things are the way they are.
But that is why a theory is just that a theory :)

1a.) Yes Race is real, this means different things to different people.

1b.) This make groups identifiable based on such things as.. differences in color/culture( usually)/sometimes language. That makes us belong to a group that we check off on job applications and such. There's no denying that. Although we as Christians are to view everyone as just being family and not let perceptions keep us from treating everyone equally. When there's a perception based on generalizing an entire group of people to have the same negative attributes as some in the group, we all know what that's called.

2) In the NIV, its mentioned.. race. Apparently translation matters.

Romans 9:3 (New International Version)

''3For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race.''

3) I grew up having friends of all colors, and there aren't any vestiges :)
Be Blessed,
